So You Want to Be a Social Media Manager…
Before you pursue a new career as a social media manager, may I suggest to explore your options as to the type of lifestyle you want to lead.
There are two kinds of social media managers in this world. Those in the rat race, and those who embrace a more flexible work environment.
Social media managers in the rat race have to get up, get dressed and maneuver through traffic in a daily commute. They need to pack a bag lunch, put up with annoying co-workers and ultimately work the hours their employer tells them to work.
It’s called a day job. You put in your time and for your loyalty you are paid a set social media manager salary. It’s the same pay every month. Don’t even think about making more money. Because the 2 or 3 percent raise you receive at the end of the year will barely even keep up with inflation.
It was under these circumstances that I started entertaining the idea of working at home. Back when I began, social media was in it’s infancy. Social media jobs didn’t even exist. Facebook and twitter where not even born yet. But I had to do something to increase my income and fulfill my dreams to earn a better than average living. Of course, independence was also a primary motivation.
To me the solution was to find something I could do from home. I did not want to get into multi-level marketing. While I wanted a home based business, my desire was for it to be online. After all, the internet is the easiest way to access new clients, customers and buyers – no matter what your business. It’s also the best way for anyone stuck in a day job to get started because you can grow your business part time – working in the evenings and on weekends, while you continue to make a living during the day.
It can be as simple as taking what you already know how to do for your employer and providing the same service online. The same principle applies for social media managers who want to make a better life for themselves. The social media jobs industry is exploding because you no longer need experience to get your foot in the door. Social media managers are realizing they can do this on their own… NOT for a set salary – but for unlimited income working for as many clients as they wish. Likewise, those in search of a new career or simply looking to build an online business are realizing that social media is the latest new online opportunity with less competition.
Which brings me to the other kind of social media manager I mentioned. The person who wants to embrace a more flexible lifestyle. The idea of working for yourself scares some people, but I can assure you, if you are successful the financial rewards combined with the flexibility of working when you want to (and for fewer hours) will far out way any risk. Besides, there isn’t any risk anyway if you start part time.
Whether you are currently in a day job of any kind, or one of the many work at home moms looking for a way to earn money part time, social media management is certainly something to consider.
